Ear surgery can correct the following conditions:
- Protruding ears
- Congenital anomalies
- Dissatisfaction with previous ear surgery
Otoplasty is the reshaping of the ears, correcting ears that protrude excessively from the sides of the head. Protruding ears can result in psychological trauma to children who are subject to teasing by their peers. Adults are not immune to the embarrassment of protruding ears, either. Reshaping of the ears can provide emotional and cosmetic benefits at any age.
Ear surgery can correct the following conditions:
If you are not happy with the shape of your ears then you are likely a candidate for otoplasty. The best candidates are those who have realistic expectations about what this procedure can achieve. Otoplasty can be performed on virtually any patient regardless of skin type.
There is not much necessary to do in preparation for ear surgery. Patients will receive preoperative instructions. Following these instructions improve the chances of having a safe and effective surgery
An otoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure. There are different anesthesia options available. Children will usually be placed under general anesthesia as this approach is less traumatic for children. Adults have the option of general anesthesia, IV sedation of just local anesthesia. Prior to your surgery day, Dr. Umansky will discuss the options and which is best for your particular situation.
General anesthesia is the most common option. It ensures that your surgery is both safe and comfortable. You will feel nothing during the actual procedure and the local anesthetic placed during the surgery reduces post-surgical pain. Typically, all the incisions for ear surgery are performed behind the ear, where they can be easily hidden. If front incisions are necessary, they can be easily hidden within a natural fold.
Shape changes will be made through those incisions, and then Dr. Umansky will close the surgical incisions. A headwrap is placed and will protect your ears. Once that step is complete, you will be taken out from anesthesia and moved into the recovery room.
Immediately after the procedure, some of the anesthesia will still be in your system, lessening the pain and discomfort. Once it wears off, you will likely experience some pain and discomfort in the hours after your procedure. Swelling, bruising and discoloration will also develop this time and are to be expected. Many patients are able to cope with the pain with over-the-counter medications, but prescription pain medication is generally prescribed. Pain is usually resolved within a few days.
Generally, these symptoms decline rapidly in the first week. You can typically return to your normal routines by two weeks, but you should be cautious to protect the ear region. Swelling can take several weeks to months to completely resolve.
You can expect a drastic and immediate improvement in the shape of your ears. Many people report gaining entirely new confidence levels in their daily lives. Your results are also permanent, meaning you should not worry about maintenance procedures. Any scarring will be hidden behind your ears, leaving you more confident.
Many facial surgeries can be combined with your otoplasty to create a bigger impact on your facial structure, including facelift, eyelid, brow lift, and rhinoplasty procedures.
