If “man boobs” are keeping you away from the beach this season, help is available. Male breast reduction surgery is designed to address the medical condition known as gynecomastia, or enlarged male breasts. At Umansky Plastic Surgery, we offer surgical solutions for this problem that will help you achieve a more masculine body profile and increase your self-confidence when you head to the beach or pool this summer.
The Emotional Toll of Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is not typically considered a serious medical problem. However, the emotional toll of the condition can be great. Some men develop this problem in their adolescent years, when self-confidence is already a challenge. The condition can result in significantly enlarged breast tissue, which can be traumatic for men even when wearing clothing. In severe cases, this problem can result in social withdrawal and even self-loathing. Treatment for the condition may be necessary to reverse psychological damage.
Seeking Treatment
Treatment for gynecomastia may vary, based on the specific cause of the condition. For example, some men might experience enlarged breasts as a result of hormone changes during puberty. This problem might resolve on its own once hormone levels are back in balance. Gynecomastia may also be caused by certain medications or an underlying medical condition. Stopping the medication or treating the condition may help to resolve the problem.
Surgical Options
Many men may find gynecomastia does not resolve on its own. In these situations, surgical options may be the best way to eliminate the excess breast tissue and achieve a more attractive contour. Gynecomastia surgery is performed on an outpatient basis at Umansky Plastic Surgery. William Umansky, MD and Jeffrey Umansky, MD both use the latest surgical techniques that offer the best results with the least amount of downtime.
Some men may achieve positive results with liposuction, which involves smaller incisions and less downtime than other surgical procedures. This procedure uses a small cannula to loosen and remove breast tissue, without disrupting surrounding skin and tissue. The laser is used to tighten the skin. This is often called “SmartLipo.” Recovery is usually less than one week.
Other men will require a more extensive surgical procedure that excises excess tissue and fat from the breast to create a more proportionate profile. This procedure involves an incision, usually around the areola or in the natural crease of the breast, which allows for removal of glandular tissue. Even men that require the excision procedure are usually back to work and regular activities within a couple of weeks.
