Breast augmentation is a procedure that can be performed for many different reasons including a desire for increased volume of naturally small breasts, or the restoration of breast size and shape after pregnancy or weight loss. If you are considering breast augmentation for these or other reasons, you may not know everything that is involved in the process. We will guide you through our process at Umansky Plastic Surgery, covering everything from the choices you’ll make along the way to the recovery process you can expect after your surgery. With our breast augmentations in San Diego, CA, we aim to help patients achieve the results they are looking for.
What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure used to alter the shape, size, and symmetry of the breasts, typically involving the placement of implants. While it’s widely known for enhancing breast size, this procedure goes beyond just volume, offering options to shape and balance the breasts to suit each patient’s anatomy and goals.
Some of the benefits of breast augmentation include enhanced breast symmetry, improved proportion with the rest of the body, and restoration of lost volume after weight changes or pregnancy. The surgery itself is customized to fit each patient’s unique anatomy and situation.
What Does the Breast Augmentation Process Involve?
A Consultation With Your Surgeon
Your consultation is one of the most important parts of the breast augmentation process and can set the tone for the surgery. This appointment is the first chance you will have to meet your surgeon and ask any questions, and it is our chance to get to know you and the expectations you have about the surgery. We want to know what goals you have for your breast augmentation, and we want to make sure you are a good candidate for surgery through a physical examination and a medical history. During the consultation, we will also go over all of the options you have for the type of implant, incision locations, placement, and more.
Choosing the Type of Implant
Saline Implants
Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution after they are placed in the breast which often means a smaller incision can often be used during surgery. These implants may have a firmer feel and are adjustable to allow for slight variations in size. They offer a consistent shape and are often chosen by patients who prefer an implant option that provides immediate feedback if there’s a leak since the saline would be naturally absorbed by the body and the implant would deflate.
Silicone
Silicone implants are filled with a cohesive silicone gel that closely mimics the look and feel of natural breast tissue. They are often referred to as “Gummy Bear” implants. We offer Natrelle® silicone implants, a trusted choice known for their quality and consistency. Natrelle implants provide a natural look and offer a variety of sizes and profiles and are adaptable to individual anatomy and aesthetic goals.
Other Implant Options
Implants come in smooth and textured varieties. Our practice mainly uses smooth implants for a variety of reasons. There are also different profiles, (e.g. low, moderate, or high), which influence how much the implant projects from the chest. Another important choice is implant size which allows us to customize your breast augmentation to best suit your frame and desired results.
Selecting the Placement of the Implant
For most patients, under-the-muscle placement will be recommended for its many advantages. Placing the breast implants under the muscle can help provide a smoother, more natural look and may reduce visible rippling. This placement technique also minimizes the risk of capsular contraction which can make an implant feel hard. On occasion, for those patients with more natural breast tissue, over-the-muscle placement could be a good option. We will assess your anatomy and lifestyle goals to help decide which placement offers the best results for you.
Determining the Incision Site
The incision site is another essential consideration in breast enlargement, with options for incisions under the breast fold or around the bottom edge of the areola. Each approach has its own benefits and potential downsides and we will discuss which option aligns best with your anatomy and aesthetic goals.
Preparing for the Surgery
Getting ready for your breast augmentation surgery ahead of time can make things much smoother. Start by avoiding smoking, alcohol, and any medications or supplements that may thin your blood for at least two weeks before surgery. At home, set up a comfortable recovery space with soft pillows, easy access to water, and some ice packs. Plan to have soft, easy-to-digest food, front-closure clothing, and any prescribed medications on hand. Plan to arrange for someone to drive you home, stay with you for the first 24 hours and be available to drive you to your next day appointment. Make sure to schedule the appropriate amount of time off work and avoid heavy lifting for at least two weeks.
The Surgical Procedure
Your breast augmentation surgery usually takes about one to one and a half hours. During surgery, you will be under general anesthesia, so you won’t feel anything. We’ll start by making a small incision based on our plan and then carefully create a pocket for the implant. Once the implant is in place, we will close the incision with sutures and cover the area with a dressing to keep it protected. After the procedure, you’ll have time to wake up slowly and recover with us in the recovery room under the care of one of our dedicated nurses.
Post-Surgery Care and Recovery
Breast augmentation recovery takes several weeks, but following your care plan can make it more comfortable and smooth. A surgical bra or bandage will be provided to support your chest and minimize swelling. Keeping the incisions sites clean is important. Avoid soaking in the bath tub until given clearance.
For the first few days, plan to rest but add in some light movement like walking to improve circulation and reduce the risk of clots. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for the initial recovery phase. Most patients can start to resume light daily activities within a few days, but full recovery may take several weeks. We’ll guide you on when it’s safe to return to regular exercise. Always listen to your body and take things slowly to promote a safe and smooth recovery.
